Killarney's Mt. Sinai |
I've learned a few things while working with them.
Killarney does a lot of the same things Lor-Ray does. They have:
- A Teen Retreat
- Camps for children in Preschool on up
- They operate a family camp
- They hold an annual Fall Festival (similar to our Its Chili in the Woods Chili Cook-off)
But, they also do some unique things we've not tried before:
- Work bees in Spring and Fall to open and close the camp
- Memorial Day Chicken BBQ
- Pig roast
- They have a Booster program with incentives (I suppose this is similar to our Membership program)
- Their Lutheran Church Association is made of specific churches who pay a membership fee to the camp

I'll be heading out to Camp Killarney sometime this summer to check out their facilities and programs. I encourage you to as well...but make sure not to forget about Camp Lor-Ray. ;-)

Actually, we used to have Spring and Fall work bees, as membership has gone down, so did these events. The opening and closing of the camp work days, free camping for the weekends for those who came to help etc. Now it's all done by a few board members and their families.
ReplyDeleteWell, perhaps this might be a good time to start the work bees up again. Our attendance for Kids Camp has been rising over the past few years. Hopefully the Chili Cook-off this year will re-engergize some other events.
ReplyDeleteOK, then; let's get this started...
ReplyDeleteHow does a work bee on April 21st sound? 9:00 AM start time OK with everyone? I can pretty much guarantee that we'll have more work than a group of twenty can finish in a day. Here's the list I'm aware of:
Install the rest of the bug baffle under the ridge cap of the new cabin;
Finish the soffit and fascia of the new cabin;
Finish nailing the hurricane clips in the new cabin and the new bath house;
Set forms for concrete at new cabin, old cabins, well house, and dumpster pad;
Set forms for concrete at new bath house;
Rake leaves away from all buildings, minimum of 15 feet;
Weed whack around buildings and hiking trails;
Rake gravel where roads were repaired last fall;
Move all fire extinguishers to dining hall;
Install window trim in Nurse's Cabin;
Finish final 30' of trench near Kids' Camp bath house;
Remove steps from existing cabins;
Begin framing for larger 'decks' on cabins.
I'll try to be there, but I'll already be traveling quite a bit that weekend. I can however send out an email to the churches and inform everyone.
ReplyDeleteJeff,
DeleteIf you could get the word out to everyone you have access to (e-mail, face book, web site, etc.) that would be great! There were only three of us that were able to get out to Camp after the Board meeting on Saturday so we didn't get much done then.
That list is what I gathered from recent conversations I've had and minutes of previous meetings. I understand that Frank Anderson has another list that he's worked up. Obviously we have a lot to do and the more folks that are able to get to Camp and lend a hand, the better. WESCO pizza was pretty good Saturday! I'll be ready for more on the 21st...
